Archaeology Crew / Technician

We would like to announce a summer position and training opportunity in archaeology through the Utah Conservation Corps (UCC). The archaeology position will stationed in Vernal Utah to assist the Ashley National Forest with archaeological field work and office work.

 Application review will begin on April 17 and continue until filled.  Position will start late-May or early June.

Pay will be $16.73/hour.

This is not a federal job, but is a position with the Utah Conservation Corps, assigned to the Ashley National Forest in Vernal, Utah.

 Position Requirements

• Must have a degree or be a degree seeking student in anthropology/archaeology.
• Preference given for field experience in archaeology (archaeological pedestrian survey or excavation) in the Intermountain West.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record. Drive government vehicle as required for position.
• Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check.
• US. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
• Regular and reliable attendance and dependability.
• Strongly prefer experience in working outdoors
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and computer skills. (prefer experience in data entry, use of GIS ArcMap software and familiarity with Trimble GPS equipment.)
• An independent, self-motivated, creative, and resourceful individual able to work with diverse groups of people.
• A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a team, but the ability to work independently.
• Work a flexible schedule, including 10 to 12 hour days on occasion.
• Ability to commit to a 10-week minimum term of service.

 Position Information:

• Archaeology technicians will gain experience in all facets of cultural resource Section 106 compliance by working on a variety of archaeological survey projects and archaeological pedestrian surveys.
• A portion of the time will be spent helping to prepare archeological site documentation from field surveys and assisting with the preparation of reports about the nature and extent of known cultural resources.
• This is a field-going position with a majority of time spent in a forest setting under a variety of weather conditions, often traversing steep uneven terrain.
• Field work will typically be conducted with a crew of two or more.
• Access to work sites will be by four-wheel drive truck and backpacking.
• Some survey locations may involve a limited amount overnight camping. Must be able to hike up to 10 miles per day in rugged terrain carrying a 30 lb. backpack.
• The ability to navigate by a map and gather and download field GIS data on a hand held professional grade GPS unit is essential.
